Why Confidential Waste Needs Its Own Process
Ordinary recycling and general waste collection aren’t designed to handle documents containing personal or sensitive information. Under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, organisations remain responsible for personal data right up until it’s securely destroyed, and putting it in a standard bin doesn’t meet that obligation.
Confidential waste typically includes:
- Customer and client records
- Staff files, payroll and HR paperwork
- Financial statements and account details
- Contracts and other legal documents
- Anything containing names, addresses or account references
The risk of getting this wrong is not theoretical. In 2019 the ICO issued its first fine under UK GDPR after a pharmacy left roughly 500,000 patient records in unlocked containers in a courtyard, rather than anywhere technical going wrong. A dedicated confidential waste process, with locked storage and a documented chain of custody, is what gives you evidence that this responsibility has actually been met.
What Happens to Your Waste After Shredding
Shredding is only half the process. Once your material has been destroyed, Shredsec bales the shredded paper and sends it for recycling into new paper and cardboard products. This means confidential waste disposal doesn’t just protect your data, it also keeps material out of landfill. If sustainability reporting matters to your organisation, we can confirm recycling volumes as part of your service record.
Common Questions About Confidential Waste Disposal
How often will my waste be collected? This depends on how much confidential material you generate. Many businesses find a weekly or monthly collection works well; others only need an occasional one-off clearance. We can help you work out a suitable frequency once we know your typical volume.
Do I need a contract, or can I book a one-off collection? Both options are available. A regular shredding contract usually works out better value if you generate confidential waste continuously, while a one-off shredding collection suits occasional clearouts, office moves or archive reviews.
Is there a minimum volume? We collect from small offices generating a single sack a month through to larger organisations filling multiple bins a week.
What happens if I need an urgent collection? Contact us directly and we’ll do what we can to arrange a collection outside your normal schedule.
